The customer involved in this case study used to install in its stores a combination of an EPTA ECO₂Middle refrigeration pack and a separate heat pump to satisfy the heating demand of the store. The updated configuration introduces a multistep approach for heating management, including a motorized valve on the MT suction header to enable two compressors for heat‑pump mode. This smart proposal enables great flexibility and significantly reduces CAPEX.

The system is currently installed and properly running in more than 10 stores across Germany.

Equipped with

From one ECO2Middle plus separated heat pump module to a single ECO2Middle with integrated heat pump mode.

Installation benefits

The benefits for the customer are related to the cost reduction via optimized CAPEX: an integrated refrigeration + heating system solution offers the same cooling and heating capacity but with a lower footprint and machinery costs, impacting also the installation and commissioning phase.

The proposal also offers some space for energy efficiency: depending on specific location and heating requirements, during the cold season, for a significant amount of hours, the heating demand can be satisfied with heat recovery mode only, while the heat pump mode can be activated only when colder temperatures increase heating demand.

  1. In fact, the heating mode control logic is step by step and integrated into the main pack controller:
    simple heat recovery through an on-board CO2-water heat exchanger;
  2. enhanced heat recovery with the increase of gas cooler pressure > 80 bar;
  3. maximized heat recovery via a gas cooler bypass;
  4. heat pump mode activation if all the above actions are not enough. This solution features a motorized valve on the MT suction header, to have two compressors on MT for heat pump mode and a heat pump evaporator integrated in the main gas cooler

Finally, the system is fully compatible with EPTA FTE 3.0 technology to further enhance the energy efficiency of the full system throughout the year.
