Epta has completed the Arabian Gulf’s first-ever transcritical CO₂ refrigeration installation at My City Centre Masdar in Abu Dhabi, delivering a breakthrough in high‑efficiency cooling for one of the world’s most demanding climates.
The system is built around Epta’s FTE Full Transcritical Efficiency technology and a Water sub-cooler specifically engineered to operate reliably in desert conditions where ambient temperatures can reach 51°C. By stabilising system pressures and optimising heat rejection under extreme thermal loads, the FTE solution ensures consistent performance while achieving up to 25% energy savings compared to traditional R404A systems.
Together, these technologies establish a new benchmark for sustainable, high‑efficiency refrigeration across the Gulf region.
- ECO2Large pack
- FTE 2.0 technology
- Water subcooling technology
- MT design load 150 kW
- LT design load 50 kW
- Store surface: 3500 m2
This installation represented a flagship store for the final customer, showing to the entire world the compatibility of CO2 transcritical system and harsh desert conditions.
In fact, the hypermarket is part of a larger building, where a centralized refrigerated water circuits guarantees suitable working conditions to the system thanks to an integrated H2O sub-cooler.
The first graphic shows how the gas cooler outlet temperature (~25°C) remains stable during a typical summer day in the desert, even if the ambient temperature reaches 45°C.
This allows a significant reduction of flash gas formation, represented by the low percentage of RPRV valve opening.
The second graphic shows the LT cabinets liquid line pressure, periodically dropping from receiver to MT suction line level, as a result of FTE proper functioning.
7 to 12% of efficiency increase is guaranteed, independently from external temperature.
