Epta has achieved a major advancement in refrigeration efficiency with the installation of its XTE — Extra Transcritical Efficiency — system in a supermarket in Maglód, near Budapest, Hungary.
Protected under patent EP4354046A1 and US12460843, the technology delivers significant energy saving over a wide range of operating temperatures, maintaining high performance even in outdoor temperatures up to 42°C.
The installation, known as Demo 19 within the EU-funded ENOUGH project, represents one of the first large‑scale application studies of XTE. At Maglód, the system is integrated in one of the two modular ECO₂Large power packs specifically designed for the large hypermarket
- ECO2Large pack
- XTE technology
- MT design load: 140 kW
- LT design load: 38 kW
- Store surface: 10000 m2
The refrigeration system combines an innovative energy recovery device, the pressure exchanger, with the positive effect of a subcooler, delivering a cutting-edge overall energy saving.
In fact, the key advantage ensured by XTE is the increase in system performance and reliability during a signification portion of the year, thanks to its wide range of modulation.
The system already goes into operation from +20°C, but can operate at temperatures above +40°C guaranteeing both a higher cooling capacity (if used as retrofit kit) and a higher resiliance against heat waves.
After two years of energy consumption monitoring and system optimization, the energy efficiency increase ranges between +11% and +18% in the temperature range +20°C to +40°C, with an increasing trend when ambient temperatures increase.
